Five Things Shaped Like A Whale's Tail

Nature's beauty has often inspired mankind to imitate its shapes and colors.  Here are five things--natural and not--that are shaped like a whale's tail.

Which one's your favorite? Can you guess ours?
(Hint: It's Number Five!)
  1. Thong underwear poking over low-rise jeans.  Popular since the early 2000s, this  "whale tail" is often seen at frat parties, celebrity dos and episodes of "What Not to Wear."
  2. Some turbine blades for dynamic efficiency in aeolian power generation.  Just like a whale's huge tail and fins propel the animal efficiently, some wind turbine blades have ridges inspired by cetaceans in hopes that they'll produce more energy and less noise.
  3. The reef in beautiful Uvita, Costa Rica. This sandbar leading to a tropical reef is shaped like an elegant, yet humongous, whale's tail, and is clearly visible from the air. This is a popular tourist destination for water sports--really, what better place to splish splash than by a reef that looks like a whale's tail?
  4. It makes sense that the next invention took its inspiration from our whale friends--boaters are at the water more than most people (excepting surfers, of course). The "whale tail" attachment for outboard motors on boats is designed to help the vessel stay on plane easier.
  5. Saving the best for last, of course,  is our own Whale Tails Tortilla Chips, available in three flavors and made using natural, organic,  gluten-free, non-GMO ingredients. Bite into some of our chips for a whale of a snack! Be sure to contact us for more information about our yummy, nature-inspired chips.

What in the whale is biomimicry?

In the midst of talks about Earth-friendly technology and green initiatives for the planet's future, one term the scientific community has been buzzing about recently is "biomimicry." It sure sounds important, but what is it, exactly?

Well, what comes to mind when we think of mimicry in nature? How about the phasmid, better known by its nickname, the walking stick? Think also about the amazing leaf insect, whose foliage-inspired camouflage is so accurate, it has parts on its body that mimic bite marks--they even move just like real leaves, swaying in the breeze. Both of these critters got their disguises and behaviors from the environments they live in--basically, through evolution, they borrowed an idea from nature and made it work for them.

Biomimicry is basically the same thing, but for humans. It is, as Janine M. Beynus describes, "about looking to nature for inspiration for new inventions." As a science, it's grounded in neither nature nor technology exclusively; rather, it takes the two seemingly-opposing fields and aims to blend them together for mutual benefit.

There's already been plenty of well-documented examples of biomimicry in action in the scientific world, and the results are impressive, to say the least. For instance, take a look at this special adhesive inspired by the sticky pads on a gecko's feet, perfect for medical bandages, or a concept for self-cleaning surfaces based on the leaves of the sacred lotus, or (one of our favorites) this concept for boat rudders based on humpback whale flippers. More info on specific projects and ideas can be found at www.asknature.org--chances are, if there's a problem that needs solving, nature has the perfect answer!

Of course, Whale Tails Tortilla Chips are a great example of biomimicry in action, too! The whale's tail is perfectly made for powerful strokes through the deep blue sea; likewise, our chips swim through salsa like no other! As always, contact us for more info on the marvels of nature and their role in eco-friendly initiatives.

Fresh Fruit Smoothies And Other Healthy Snacks That Are Good For You

When it comes to healthy snacks nothing can beat the versatility of the classic smoothie.  They are easy and inexpensive to create with endless flavor combinations to try.  One suggestion, invest in a good blender because you will be using it, often.

Just close your eyes and imagine a tropical sunset on the beach with a cool drink close at hand.  Now imagine that drink is a smoothie made with fresh fruit like mangos, pineapple, kiwi, strawberries and bananas, all in a tall, cool glass.  Doesn't that sound healthy and delicious?  Just the thought of that ice cold smoothie will cool you off, even on the hottest summer day.

They can also be whipped up as a breakfast alternative, providing all the nutritional value you need in the morning.  The breakfast smoothie will fill you up and you will be less tempted to add calories before lunch.  In that way they can be part of a weight loss plan as well.  We suggest the Blueberry Banana Smoothie to jump start your day.

Another great thing about smoothies is how you can combine great nutrition with great taste.   To fortify a delicious fresh fruit smoothie, you can add whey or soy protein, ground flax seed, chia seeds, multi-vitamins and more.  Your choice, depending on your individual nutritional needs.

When you are looking for healthy choices in your snacking, be sure to check out our Original Flavor Yellow Organic Corn Tortilla Chips, with “Alaea” Red Gourmet Hawaiian Sea Salt or for a nutritional boost try our delicious Organic Blue Corn Tortilla Chips, infused with Chia.  You will find all of our products to be organically grown (no GMOs here), gluten-free and kosher.

Another Great Chips n Dips Combo

As you know, Whales Tails Tortilla Chips go great with many different types of dips. You can find a lot of those dips and salsas in the chip aisles of the stores where our chips are sold, and for people on the go, it's a convenient snack option. In a previous post, we told you about making salsa at home. It's a great way to get the freshest ingredients and to experiment with many different flavor combinations. However, one of the greatest chips n dips combinations ever is guacamole and Whales Tails chips. Guacamole is just as easy to make at home.

The key to fresh guacamole is the avocado. For a batch of guacamole for one person, you probably won't need more than three or four small avocados. Don't make too much because guacamole won't stay fresh for more than a day or two. When selecting an avocado, pick up the avocado and press it gently with your thumb. If the avocado is too firm, it is not ripe and won't mash or cut easily. However, if the avocado is too soft and your thumb breaks through the skin, the avocado is too ripe.

After washing the avocados, you'll need to peel them. Get a table knife and cut lengthwise all the way around the avocado. You won't be able to get the knife all the way through because of the seed in the middle of the avocado. If you pull gently on one of the sides of the avocado, it should tear away and reveal the large round seed inside. Get a spoon and gently remove the seed. Then use the spoon to scoop out the green avocado "meat" into a bowl. Sometimes the meat is yellow or brown on the edges closes to the peel, but this is perfectly normal and safe to eat. Discard the seeds and peels.

Once you have scooped out all your avocados, use a fork to gently mash them. The consistency should be like mashed potatoes and not too lumpy, but smoothness is a matter of personal preference. Get a couple of lemons and squeeze them onto the avocados. The lemons add a bit of tangy flavor and keep the avocados from turning brown. Make sure that you remove any lemon seeds that might fall into the bowl. Then stir in a little garlic salt to taste. You can let your guacamole refrigerate to let the flavors combine before eating, or, if you can't wait, dig in!

As with the salsa, you can experiment with many different ingredients. Washed and finely chopped cilantro, onions, jalapenos, or tomatoes will give the guacamole extra flavor, or you could sprinkle cumin or chili powder in for extra seasoning. Use your imagination and have fun with it!

The Benefits of Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are not just for chia pets anymore. This ancient Mayan seed is the new super food, and a key ingredient in our Blue Tor"chia" Chips. So what are the benefits of chia seeds? These tiny seeds pack a big nutritional punch. Here are some of the ways they work their health magic:

Add healthy Omega-3 oil to your diet

Chia seeds are the richest plant-source of this healthy oil. We love the ocean, and everything that lives in it. Chia seeds are a way to get this essential oil without harming any of the ocean's residents. In fact, chia seeds contain even more Omega-3 than salmon. This oil is important in maintaining heart and cholesterol health, and has even been targeted as a weight-loss helper.

Feel more energized all day long

Chia is also one of nature's highest plant-based sources of complete protein. Usually protein from other plant-based sources is incomplete, meaning you have to balance it with protein from other sources to get the full effect. But with chia seeds, it's protein is complete enough to give you steady energy all day long.

Get the calcium and fiber your body needs

Many Americans do not get enough calcium. Chia seeds deliver up to five times more calcium than milk! Snacking on a chip with chia seeds can actually contribute to keeping your bones strong and healthy. Bonus! Chia seeds also deliver 42% of your daily recommended dose of fiber per ounce. Fiber is vital for all aspects of health, and is especially key for weight loss and digestion. And it's another one of those things that we just don't get enough of.

And do you know what's really incredible about chia seeds? You get all of these health benefits and great flavor. Chia seeds actually enhance the natural flavors of whatever item they are used in. So they give our organic blue chips an extra nutty and delicious flavor.

To find out more about how you can snack your way to health, please feel free to contact us.

Nuts and Seeds Can Be Great Healthy Snacks And Give You An Energy Boost Too

We were reading about the health benefits of snacking on nuts and seeds recently and what caught our attention was how nuts and seeds can provide a long-lasting energy boost which can help you maintain stamina and focus.
The website of the esteemed Mayo Clinic tells us that:
"Eating nuts as part of a healthy diet can be good for your heart. Nuts, which contain unsaturated fatty acids and other nutrients, are a great snack food, too. They're inexpensive, easy to store and easy to take with you to work or school."
They also write that:
"People who eat nuts as part of a heart-healthy diet can lower the LDL, low-density lipoprotein or "bad," cholesterol level in their blood. High LDL is one of the primary causes of heart disease."
Did you know that Magnesium, which is abundant in most nuts, can be very beneficial in the reduction of inflammation?  When Inflammation may be responsible for so many health problems, including heart disease and type 2 diabetes, we were pleased to learn that consuming nuts when snacking can be a effective way to reduce that inflammation. Nuts have always been know as a great source of energy.

One of our favorite seeds to eat is the amazing Chia Seed.  Did you know that they are helpful with weight loss by keeping calories from being absorbed into your system?  They are also high in Omega 3s and have shown to be beneficial additions to the diabetic diet.  They are very helpful in controlling blood sugars.

When it comes to healthy snacks, Whale Tails Chips totally fits your "good for you" requirements.  Contact us today to find out all about our organic, non-gmo, kosher and gluten-free snacking options.

Don't Forget To Share Your Small Business Sustainability Efforts With The World

Over the last 20 years or so, some of the largest companies in the world have been investing in environmental sustainability and in doing so, have helped us all focus on the future of our environment and on trying to make a more responsible impact.  While the public relations angle must have been taken into consideration, it is still a very positive sign for the future of business sustainability in general.  It is the actions of the bigger companies that will influence how our small businesses handle their sustainability planning in the future.

If you have recently begun expanding your efforts in the area of sustainability and have taken some steps in that direction, don't forget to share that information with your customers.  One way you could accomplish this is to print your brochures on recycled paper and then make note of that on the brochure itself.  When catering lunch for clients, seek out organic and local foods.  Let your clients know how you are working to reduce your carbon footprint.

When searching for green products and services for your small business, have a discussion with your vendors about your efforts and how you are trying to reduce the time and energy involved in obtaining their products or services.  Word of mouth from one client to another about your businesses sustainability efforts could result in a customer at your door.
Because so many of us are really trying to lead more sustainable lives it is only natural that we would seek out local small businesses that feel the same.  When a customer chooses your small business because it reinforces their efforts, you will develop a more trusting relationship with your customer.  Not only will you be better poised for business success, you will find that your endeavors are also rewarding for you as well.

At Whale Tails our commitment to the environment and sustainability includes the ocean life that has been integral to both the product and the mission of Whale Tails since its inception in 2007. What began in Ocean Beach as a stovetop experiment after a day of surfing, Whale Tails are now available at many Whole Foods locations.  We are confident that you will agree, healthy snacking while helping the environment never tasted so good.  Contact us today to find your new favorite chip!

A Great Chips N Dips Combo

One of the best chips n dips combos ever is tortilla chips with salsa. There are many great varieties available in stores that carry Whale Tails Chips, but making salsa at home needn't be difficult or time consuming. In fact, making salsa gives you the freshest taste possible and allows you to experiment with many different combinations of flavors.

One of the easiest salsas that you can make to enjoy with our chips is pico de gallo. To make a batch enough for one person, all you need are a few fresh Roma tomatoes, one fresh jalapeno pepper, a small onion, a couple of limes, and some cilantro stalks. After throughly washing all of the ingredients, cut the tomatoes and onions into small pieces and place them in a large mixing bowl. Cut the cilantro leaves and stalks into bite-size pieces and mix it with the tomatoes and onions. Carefully cut the jalenpeno into small pieces. If you want a milder salsa, you might want to remove the seeds from the jalapeno before you put it into the mixing bowl. Finally, squeeze the limes and pour the juice into the bowl. Be careful to make sure that none of the seeds fall into the bowl with the juice. Stir everything together. Refrigerate the salsa for around an hour so that the ingredients have a chance to blend, and then dig in with some Whale Tails Chips!

This recipe can be altered, depending on your taste. For example, if you want an even spicier mix, you could use serrano peppers instead of jalapenos. Or you could add in bits of mango, peaches. You might prefer tangy green tomatoes to Romas. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination!

Considering The Environment In Your Small Business Sustainability Practices

In today's difficult economic situation, it can be especially tough for a small business, just getting on it's feet, to implement the plans that we have for running a green and sustainable company. It is not necessary to invest thousands of dollars in the beginning, there are a number of sustainability best practices that you can start, today, that will get you on the path toward realizing your vision for a business that is responsible to the environment and utilizes "green" small business practices.
Here are some tips to get you started:
  • Be Paper Wise
Be aware of just how much paper you are using in your office each day. Ask yourself if it really necessary to print of that report or email.  By using an iPad connected to your network, your employees can bring their email with them to your meetings.  If you must print, the "fast draft" or "black and white" settings should be considered first.
  • Unplug And Hibernate
By using power strips with surge protection, the benefits are twofold. Not only will you be protecting your valuable electronics from power surges but you will be able to more easily control which appliances should be powered completely off at the end of the day and which should stay plugged in.  For the latter, utilize the  "hibernate" or "sleep mode" when available.
  • Have Potluck For Lunch
This can be especially effective if you encourage your employees to make it a meat-free potluck.  They can experiment with recipes or bring favorites from home.  This one little thing can mean a 28.5% reduction in each person's carbon footprint if they can make the entire day meat-free.  Remember "Meatless Mondays"?
  • Encourage Carpooling and Recycling
To encourage carpooling it can be as simple as making people aware of an online service that they can take advantage of, and a visit to the storage container store will outfit you with an attractive set of recycling bins.  Take advantage of any cash rebates, like for aluminum, and hire a waste company that recycles too.  You might need to make that suggestion to your building management team.
  • Assign A Dishwasher
Encourage your employees to participate in your efforts by volunteering for dish washing duty.  This way you can ban all plastic and styrofoam from your lunch room and stock it with real glass and ceramic dish wear from a restaurant supply store (or solicit donations).  Hand washing would be preferable to a dishwasher, or is it?  Every little bit helps, especially when it comes to keeping things out of the landfill.
These are just a few things that are relatively inexpensive and painless as well as easy to implement.  If you know of other ways, maybe more creative ways, to lessen our carbon foot print, we would love to hear about it.  Contact us and let's work together toward a greener future.

Eco Friendly Packaging

Why use eco friendly packaging? Just imagine how much plastic is in the ocean right now. It's esimated that there are 46,000 pieces of plastic per square mile. There is way too much plastic packaging making it's way to our beaches. It's also filling up the landfills at an alarming rate. Whale Tails is commited to finding a chip bag that will be completely
degradable.

Love Your Ocean

We love the ocean and the whales that live there. We have put a different seascapes of Wyland’s on each of our chip bags to remind our customers why we strive to be eco friendly. Nothing is more beautiful than whales in action. Through our whale tail design and beautiful packaging we encourage all of our customers to recycle.

Tasty and Eco Friendly

We want to show the world that you can have quality snacks and save the ocean at the same time. We love to surf and we want the ocean to be a fun experience for everyone. By developing a completely  degradable snack bag we will greatly reduce water pollution. Only 20% of snack bags are recycled. The rest finds their way to the ocean and to landfills.

Dedicated to Saving The Environment

Whale Tails is commited to saving the environment. In addition to using eco friendly packaging we are active in many environmental foundations such as The Wyland Foundation, IFAW, NRDC, WildCoast, Sea Shepherd, and many more. We believe that we can make a difference.

Non-GMO is not just a Political Buzzword

You might have heard a lot of about genetically modified foods (commonly called GMO) recently, especially in California as November will allow voters to decide on whether or not GMO foods should be labeled.  You might have noticed a lot of packages, like ours, advertise they are non gmo and you might not know what the big deal is.

Genetically modified crops are those that have been forcefully mutated.  The genes of one crop have been crossed with another crop to form a stronger type of crop or the colors of the crop more vibrant.  This might seem positive at first glance, but the consequences are far reaching the more you get to know.  The first is that foods that are GMO or contain GMO are not required to be labeled here in the United States.  In addition, the regulation for this type of processing is highly overlooked by the US government, which means many companies don't have the proper oversight required to keep public health in check.

Many GMO crops have been engineered with genes of bacteria or virus.  Doing so assists to make the plant resistant to pesticides and other chemically toxic materials that many farmers introduce to food to prevent weeds and bugs from taking over their harvest.  Besides the fact that consumers then ingest these chemicals because they are eating the plant that was sprayed numerous times over the course of its growing life, but those same GMO plants go on to contaminate local fields, over taking non GMO farmer plants.  These same crops become resistant to the pesticides over time, eventually causing farmers to use a stronger pesticide as more growing seasons occur.

GMO plants reduce genetic diversity among plants.  When genes are diverse, they allow for more nutritional value, and more robust plants.  It makes them more vulnerable to drought, insect and viral infections that can do serious harm to our food supply.  Unfortunately, once contamination has occurred, there's no going back.  The plant will continue to pass along the mutated genes to future seeds.

Finally, the consequences of eating GMO food are unknown.  Unfortunately, there haven’t been enough real studies that would indicate that they are safe to consume, despite the environmental consequences.  GMO food was introduced in 1996, which means society as a whole has consumed this food for less than 20 years.  In fact, some studies have suggested that eating GMO foods can be toxic as well as lead to allergies.  Mice fed GMO foods had liver problems, and rabbits have showed kidney and heart problems.

We’re committed to bringing you a healthy product, free from genetically modified ingredients.  For more information on our products, please contact us today!

Aloha and get the guacamole!

Dude! I thought the tortilla chip innovation nation was over a long time ago.  I mean how can genius be duplicated in the 21St Century?  I didn't know I was tired of almost munching on my fingers every time we go to that one chick's house for parties, until I saw these chips.  Makes me want to go down to the Mavericks and party hearty.  And eat chips.
Now just talking about it makes me want to grub on some of those babys! Anyway, can you believe that now I have to watch my cholesterol! These are different, made with chia seeds, full of Omega 3"s whatever that is,  and your bro Irving can eat them because they are kosher.

Hawaiian salt, for sure does that even really exist?  Organic (like me!!), ya called Alaea salt. Well whatever, it's still really great with Pabst!  Dude, what day is it, hey wanna go surfing? So you have to watch your gluten? Why? You're only 40!  Don't old people have to quit gluten?  Anyway what IS gluten?  And why can't you eat it?

That old lady that works in the corner store told me this Alaea salt is good for ya.  She said she read in www.whaletaleschips.comThat..."Alaea is unique to the Hawaiian Islands and legendary for being low in sodium content , 3% to be exact , and high in essential trace minerals that our bodies require. Alaea is sun dried, never processed, and imparts the rich earthy taste of corn that has been roasted “Island Style” over an open flame."

Roasted over an open flame? Sounds like a Luau to me, Jack.  I can get so much dip on these chips it's crazy. Shaped like the back end of your surf board, no lie!  If Toddzilla wants some for his surf shop he should contac t us.  Aloha and get the guacamole!

Biomimicry; Helping Humans Solve Problems by Studying Nature

A new kind of science is emerging as a method by which we can learn from Earth’s natural processes. Sustainability is a focus of Biomimicry as it seeks to understand how nature solves her own problems.

In 1997, author and scientist Janine Benyus defined Biomimicry as a science that “studies nature’s models and then imitates or takes inspirations from these designs and processes to solve human problems”.

The San Diego Zoo has been practicing Biomimicry since 2007, and it commissioned this study in 2010, called “Global Biomimicry Efforts: An Economic Game Changer.”

The study notes that, “Two very different approaches are followed in the use of biomimicry. In some cases, scientists see an interesting concept in nature and then find a commercial application. In other instances, firms are seeking a solution to a specific problem and find an answer in the natural world.”

San Diego seems ideally situated to begin the next wave of scientific brilliance via Biomimicry. They predict that Biomimicry will help reduce the depletion of natural resources, create jobs and industry. In fact, the study declares “Biomimicry could be a major economic game changer.”

As science searches for answers to our most difficult human problems, Biomimicry shows us that we may find the best answers in nature.

The wildlife that dwells in our oceans are benefiting from this new science already.  Beautiful data gathering robotic fish created by University of Essex professor Dr. Huosheng Hu measure levels of pollution. They swim around among real fish, and the data they collect is used by scientists to help protect the natural inhabitants of that body of water.

Humans are benefiting from Biomimicry as well. Florida-based biotech company, Sharklet Technologies, has invented a shark skin inspired adhesive film for use in the medical field for the prevention of infection in humans. Their specialty is "bacterial inhibition for medical devices", and they are successful innovators in the world of human medicine.

To find out more about why Biomimicry matters to Whale Tale Chips, please contact us.

Tummy Growling? Look for Healthy Vending Options

I am sure you have been there. You have spent the day surfing or on the beach with your family. All the snacks were eaten on the beach, or perhaps they were eaten in the car on the way to your next destination. You are trying to eat as healthy as possible, but your schedule sometimes gets tight, which causes you to eat on the run occasionally. Whether you are at work on an empty stomach or at the hospital visiting a loved one, you will find healthy vending options in your nearest snack machines.
One of those healthy vending options is Whale Tail's Blue Corn Tortilla Chips infused with Chia. Chia seed is a super food that contains omega-3 fatty acids, and omega-3's are known to lower cholesterol.
They are also a good source of fiber, protein, calcium, magnesium and phosphorous. For hundreds of years, this tiny seed was used by the Aztecs as their main energy source. Plant Sources of Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Cleveland Clinic
Not only is it healthy to eat our chips, it is incredibly fun too. The tortilla chips are shaped like a whale's tail.
Having the Chia infused into the Corn Chips is not the only reason that the chips are healthy for you. All varieties of Whales Tail's Chips are made with Organic Corn that is grown in the USA. The Many Benefits of Chia Seeds

You might have seen our Organic Blue Corn chips, which advertise that they are infused with chia seeds and you may have found yourself wondering, "So?"  If that's gone through your head, allow us to take a minute to talk about the benefits of chia seeds.  Yes, we're dedicating a whole blog to chia seeds, because they are just that cool.
Chia seeds are considered a superfood, which is to say it is a food that contains a high amount of nutrition per bite.  Chia seeds are taken from a desert plant, Salvia hispanica, which is a member of the mint family.  Mainly grown in southern Mexico, it is said that Indians used the seed for energy and substance.  They are flavorless on their own and magnify the flavors they are mixed with, which means you get the benefit without any weird tastes.
So what can the seed do for you?
  • Help you lose weight.  If you were to take some chia seeds and put them in a glass of water and return in about an hour, the water would become gelatinous because of all the soluble fiber in the seed.  This gelatin property helps you feel fuller longer.  In addition, it prevents calories from being absorbed since the gel provides a coating and prevents caloric absorption.
  • Chia seeds are high in calcium.  In fact, they have more calcium than whole milk.
  • Chia seeds have tons of anti-oxidant properties.  The same thing you find in blueberries and exotic fruits.  Anti-oxidants help you stay younger longer.  That's why chia seeds are capable of staying fresh for so long at room temperature without preservatives.  You can leave them on the counter for two years and they'll still remain fresh and ready to eat.
  • Chia seeds have omega-3.  They have more omega-3 than salmon!  Omega-3 helps heart disease and other inflammatory causing problems, like arthritis.  In addition, they help to reduce blood pressure.
  • Chia seeds give you energy.  Because they contain complete protein, and balance that with other vitamins and minerals, you'll have more energy that is long lasting.
There is an abundance of ways to include chia seeds in your diet; we've found just one tasty way by including it in our Organic Blue Corn Whale Tails!
For more health benefits of our unique tortilla chips, please contact us today!

Their tastes change, or they discover “Lunchables” in the grocery store and refuse to discuss a rice cracker and vegan cheese option.
Here are 3 complete lunch plans that will spark your kid’s appetite for healthy, gluten free food.
  1. Oceans of Lunch; Hawaiian BBQ Whale tail chips with a build it yourself wrap. Try putting a favorite lunchmeat, small slices of cheese, a gluten free wrap cut in half, and raw vegetables sliced thin in a container so your child can build their own lunch. Include a small container of slices of starfruit.
  2. Dip It; Many kids will try a new vegetable if it’s accompanied by a favorite dip. Try broccoli cut up so it looks like little trees and washed and peeled carrots cut in half lengthwise so they are still very long. Cut an apple off of the core, and then carefully reassemble it. Hold it together with one hand and wrap a rubber band around the thickest part of the apple. It looks whole, now. But the cut sides of the apple won’t turn brown. Include a small container of fruit dip. Don’t forget the Blue Corn Whale tail chips and a small container of salsa!
  3. Fiesta on Friday; A soft gluten free taco shell, Mexican rice, your meat of choice (or omit the meat for a vegetarian  option), a small container of shredded cheese, lettuce, salsa are all you need to provide a fun Friday lunch. Add Original Whale Tail chips and expect an empty lunchbox at the end of the day!
For extra credit, slip a joke in your child’s lunch. Here’s a freebie:

The non profit Wyland Foundation is actively engaged in teaching millions of students around the country about the importance of conserving our oceans, river, lakes, streams, and wetlands. Both Whale Tails and Wyland hold fast to a simple goal of promoting, protecting, and preserving the world’s ocean, waterways, and marine life. This commitment to ocean life has been integral to both the product and the mission of Whale Tails Tortilla Chips since our inception. In order to pursue this shared aim, Whale Tails Tortilla Chips donate 10 percent from the new bags of chips to the Wyland foundation. That’s the key to making a difference. Steve Creech, the vice president of Wyland Worldwide says that the revenue raised from the chips sales will go towards their “clean water mobile learning center.” This program travels to schools across the nation to educate children about “urban runoff, habitat destruction and the importance of collaboratively managing water as a shared resource.”

Whale Tails Tortilla Chips currently offers three dangerously flavors of QAI certified organic, kosher, non gmo, gluten free tortilla chips.

Original Flavor Yellow Organic Corn with “Alaea” Red Gourmet Hawaiian Sea Salt. Alaea is unique to the Hawaiian Islands and legendary for being low in sodium content , 3% to be exact , and high in essential trace minerals that our bodies require.Alaea is sun dried, never processed, and imparts the rich earthy taste of corn that has been roasted“Island Style” over an open flame. This original flavor with guacamole is absolutely amazing!!

Blue Corn w/ Chia Seeds Organic Blue Corn infused with Chia. By adding a Blue“Torchia” chip to the flavor lineup, Whale Tails Tortilla Chips takes healthy snacking to a whole new level.Infusing organic blue corn with the rediscovered ancient Mayan super seed Chia, adds a healthy punch and a wonderful nut like flavor to a delicious deep-blue organic corn chip. Blue Corn Chia is the best healthy snack for a gluten-free casein-free diet. The beauty of blue corn is the amount of antioxidants it contains. The Anthocyanin in the chips help with anti inflammatory and connective tissue regeneration. Chia seeds are high in fiber, have twice the protein of any other seed or grain, five times the calcium of milk, and contain boron which is trace mineral that helps transfer calcium into your bones, as well as omega 3 and omega 6 essential oils.

Hawaiian Barbeque. Savory and sweetened with Sun ripened mango. This organic chip will have your taste buds standing up and doing a “hula ‘ The savory island barbeque flavor with a trace of tropical sun-ripened mango and a splash of lime, creates just the right amount of zest to satisfy the palette." The MOF (Mauli Ola Foundation) COOL DUDE Tour 2012 rolls into La Jolla Shores

The MOF (Mauli Ola Foundation) COOL DUDE Tour2012 rolls into La Jolla Shores.

On Sunday June 17 the Mauli Ola Foundation 2012 COOL DUDE Tour made it's fifth stop in it's nationwide tour at La Jolla Shores California. The Mauli Ola Foundation exists to introduce surfing as a natural treatment to people with genetic disorders. Since 2007 MOF has concentrated on the amazing connection between Surfing and Cystic Fibrosis.

With a backdrop of ideal sunny weather and good sized surf, young Cystic Fibrosis patients and their families enjoyed top notch surfing instruction from local and international surf stars. Among those helping out with the lessons were Shawn "Barney" Barron of Mavericks fame, big wave rider David Langer and  Kalani Robb  from Hawaii's North Shore. Representing the local instructors was Kara Kraszewski of Menehune Surf School in La Jolla

"A big mahalo to the community of La Jolla Shores for granting  permission to hold an event on their beach. There’s a lot of private homes, but the HOA and the community were very supportive of our cause, and they granted us the use of their beach."said MOF Surf Experience Director, Bobby Serna.

The MOF Surf Experience Days impart the message of natural saline therapy.  Serna is passionate about Mauli Ola Foundation’s partnering with hospitals, explaining that these ongoing hospital partnerships are crucial in “leading families to understand that it is a medical treatment we are providing.”

The CF patients down at La Jolla Shores ranged in age from 5 years old to young adults. For MOF Surf Experience Director, Bobby Serna, watching these kids build self-esteem through surfing is one of the most rewarding aspects of his job. “Most of these kids, no matter how athletic they are, they’ll eventually have a CF episode where they lack stamina and become out of breath.”  Though feeling different while participating in athletic activities can take a toll on their self-esteem, Mauli Ola, which  means "Breath of Life" in Hawaiian, provides a safe and encouraging environment where these kids can just be kids and feel like they are succeeding out there on the waves.

“Anything to put a smile on their faces and to help these kids live a longer and happier life” said Bobby Serna

The events and the Cool Dude tour is made possible by numerous sponsors including etnies, Skull Candy, Ambry Genetics, Hybrid, Flexfit, Screen Candy, and Vitamin Water. Organic Snack provider at the La Jolla Shores event was Whale Tails Tortilla Chips.

The Mauli Ola La Jolla CF Surf day continues the "Cool Dude" tour that kicked off May 5 at Churches State Beach in San Clemente, California. with professional surfers embarking on a National Tour introducing surfing as a natural treatment for Cystic Fibrosis in HI, CA, TX, FL, SC, NC, VA, MD, NJ, NY, MA and RI.

Whale Tails Tortilla Chips started in the kitchen of a beach side home and was the first snack food company to use hand harvested and sun dried Alaea blended Hawaiian Sea Salt to flavor it's original batch of uniquely whale tail shaped tortilla chips. Whale Tails Chips commitment to focus on sustainability and the use of only non gmo, pesticide free ingredients earned them the honor of being selected as a Whole Foods Local Producer Loan recipient. To be a recipient you must prove that your products and company have the highest ethical and socially responsible business practices. Loan proceeds helped the company to develop an omni degradable bag film with TekPak Solutions of Canada and two amazing new flavors.

Added for the show is Whale Tails Tortilla Chips Savory Hawaiian Barbeque flavor that is sweetened with tropical sun ripened mango and a Blue Corn tortilla chip that is infused with the Mayan ancient super seed Chia. With origins dating back centuries, Chia is a Mayan Super Seed which contains more omega 3's than flax to help promote healthy digestion encouraging weight loss and a welcome addition to those on a gluten free diet as a good source of protein and high in calcium. I tried these Blue Whale Tails Tor”Chia” chips with JalapeƱo Hummus ..absolutely delicious. I used their new Hawaiian Barbeque flavor chips as the perfect “loader” for Pepper Jack Nachos and the chip held up perfectly under the weight of the Black Beans and Fresh Mango Salsa without breaking. The original flavor Alaea Hawaiian Sea Salt was the by far the best dipping chip I have ever had with guacamole.

On the second day of the show be sure to stop by Mr Smith's, a cool lounge/club located a few blocks from the convention at 34 7th St. Buyer's Best Friend is hosting a cocktail party for Fancy Food Show VIPs. The party will start at 7 pm and the venue, Mr. Smith's, features three floors, including a lounge, dance floor and main cocktail bar - making some of the best cocktails in San Francisco.
