Nachos
This one may seem a bit obvious, but have you tried your favorite nacho recipe with our Whale Tails Tortilla Chips? With flavors ranging from original yellow corn to blue corn to plenty of others, you can spice up those bland, same old-same old recipes for nachos in your house. Plus, Whale Tails Tortilla Chips aren't just delicious and different; they are healthy as well. They are non-gmo project verified and made from organically grown corn. This means you can feel a little less bad about adding that extra cheese or salsa to your nacho dinner.
Tortilla Chip Casserole
Here's an easy idea for when you have that last third of the bag of chips just laying around or maybe just the crumbs at the very bottom of the bag. There are plenty of recipes for this online that go into more detail, but let's run it down real quick here. You start by putting a can of sliced tomatoes into a baking sheet. You then spice it up with whatever flavors your prefer and then add black beans. Next you mix a variety of liquids like milk and sour cream and add it in with the tortilla chips on top of the tomatoes and beans. Cook at 350 degrees for 25 minutes, take it out, add a layer of cheese, let it melt and presto! You just made yourself a tasty dinner that's even better with the yummy and fun Whale Tails Tortilla Chips.
These are just a few of the ideas for dinner recipes involving Whale Tails Tortilla Chips. If you'd like to try these or come up with your own dinner concoction then contact us today.

3 Colleges that Turn Tailgate Parties into an Art

As sure as football season brings in throngs of frothing fanatics to the bumper, camping out with bags of Whale Tails Tortilla Chips and bratwurst in hand in the most traditional way, there will always be college students with unique ideas on how to make tailgating an art.

Take for example The University of Washington. On the cold, jagged waters of Lake Washington, situated near the east end of the stadium resides moored boats. And on game day, these boats become a makeshift parking lot filled to the bow and stern with Huskies drinking and cajoling. What the Husky Harbor lacks in concrete, they make up for with ingenuity. Truly original.

Travel to the East Coast and you'll find the venerable, old soul known as Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish dress up their events with good old fashioned Irish revelry. Dressing up tables with Irish floral arrangements, donning traditional garb, drinking Irish beer and eating Irish food. Wonder if they could use some Whale Tails Tortilla Chips and salsa to mix things up with?

Finally, we head to the Deep South, the culturally-rich geographic sub-region where Louisiana State lives and, according to some, actually breathes. LSU students have turned tailgate cooking into a professional arena. They have replaced typical tailgating dishes like hot dogs with ribs; scrapped hamburgers for jambalaya; and turned bratwurst into roasted pig. Honestly... roasted pig. Who knew LSU was more than a great place to go to school and a superb football team?

For more information on our natural, organic, non gmo project verified and gluten-free tortilla chips that will turn your next tailgate party into an experience to remember, contact us anytime.

Why Corn Chips Are More Healthy Than Flour Chips

Have you ever thought about the difference between flour tortillas and corn tortillas or the difference between flour tortilla chips and corn tortilla chips? There are some astronomical differences. Not only are corn tortilla chips much better for you, but they taste even better! Whale Tails Tortilla Chips are non-gmo project verified and come from organically grown corn. Here are some of the differences between a corn tortilla chip like ours and a regular flour based tortilla chip.

Calories

Corn tortillas typically have about 70 calories while flour tortillas usually have about 150. In other words: with corn tortilla chips, you can intake less than half the calories as flour tortilla chips.

Fat

Corn tortillas typically have 1 gram of fat versus 3.5 grams of fat in flour tortillas. 1.5 of those grams of fat in flour tortillas are saturated fat which is typically considered the worst kind for your diet.

Ingredients

Corn tortillas are typically only made from simple ingredients like water and corn flour. They are wheat and gluten free which are huge pluses. Meanwhile, one flour tortilla can amount to 20% of your daily sodium intake. Whale Tails Tortilla Chips, like most other corn based tortilla chips, are non-gmo project verified and organically grown from corn.

These are just a handful of the benefits of choosing corn tortilla chips over flour tortilla chips. However, besides being healthy, you'll know after trying some of our Whale Tails Tortilla Chips that these chips are more than healthy. They are delicious! And did we mention fun? Those two are the most important factors to include on any diet. These healthy snacks got it all so contact us today.

You too can allow your snack chips to have a purpose. Whale Tails Tortilla Chips are snack foods with a mission and a purpose. These premium chips are invested in the purpose, to save the oceans. This is one of the only chip companies that are mission driven.

The ocean is slowly being choked with pollutants of a man made variety. It is a fact that a staggering amount of waste enters the sea every year. This is something that has only been an issue for the past 60 years. Plastic bags, rings and man made pollutants now pollute our oceans. In addition to the pollutants added to the ocean on a daily basis, oceans are consistently over-fished leading to the possible depletion of all species by the year 2048. This would be a catastrophe for all those that rely on fish as a major source of protein.

Many people also rely on the oceans as a livelihood and find it to be their main source of income. This is the reason that oceans need to be completely protected.  Many people feel a need to do what they can to protect and save the seas.

Purchasing these chips is one of the ways you can enjoy a delicious snack that is designed to allow you to contribute toward saving the ocean in a most appetizing and health conscious way. Our chips are considered to be mission driven since much of the proceeds go to foundations entrusted with saving the ocean.

The best thing about our chips is that they are pure deliciousness with a purpose. Premium and healthy ingredients are used in our chips to make sure they are a delicious and nutritious fast food alternative. These chips allow you to take something as mundane as dips for chips and make it into a tasty alternative with a mission.

Those of us at Whale Tail Chips consider ourselves to be stewards of the sea, and devote a portion of our profits  toward ocean protection and conservation, contact us for ways to purchase these chips and contribute toward the well being of the seas.

Whale Tails Tortilla Chips Are Perfect for Any Gluten Free Diet

Whale Tails Tortilla Chips Are Perfect for Any Gluten Free Diet

More information is available today about foods and diets than ever before. More and more people are educating themselves on what exactly is in foods and how their bodies are responding and why. Many have found that it is common for the human body to respond negatively to gluten and that a gluten free diet is one with many benefits to your health and body. The trouble can be finding affordable and tasty foods to eat when trying to cut gluten out of your regular diet. We have a perfect organic snack for you.

Gluten is a protein found in most wheat, barley and rye. New research has found that more and more people have an allergic or negative reaction to it. These negative reactions can lead to harmful symptoms like cancer and infertility. However, gluten is present in everything from pizza dough to many soups. The biggest issue with cutting gluten out of your diet is the fact that it is so prevalent and that it gives most foods that special touch that our taste buds love.

Many also agree that gluten can be bad for everyone, not just those sensitive to it. Gluten can contain everything from opioid peptide (found in highly addictive drugs) to irritating lectins (this prevents your body from absorbing minerals).

The point is that many agree gluten is bad and going gluten free is beneficial to most people. An organic diet may be the way to go.

Whale Tails Tortilla Chips can help. It's a fun snack made from organic corn grown in the United States. The snack is gluten free and non- gmo project verified and a tasty and affordable treat for anyone looking to change their diet for the better.

You don't need to give up ALL the foods you love when you change your diet. Tortilla chips can still be in your diet and still be delicious with Whale Tails Tortilla Chips. There are great flavors like Hawaiian Barbeque and Blue Corn chips! They're delicious, healthy, fun, affordable and perfect for any occasion and diet! Gluten free never sounded so good! Our Oceans Help Us Fight Cancer

Once again, our oceans are proving to be a very valuable ally in our war against human illness.  As we continue to search for ways to create vaccinations that help us fight off life-threatening illnesses, nature can be a source of medical breakthroughs.  In this case, the Giant Keyhold Limpet, which is a marine animal similar to an Abalone, is being grown in captivity so that its blood can be harvested.  The blood harvested contains KLH (Keyhole limpet hemocyanin) which is a lot like human hemoglobin.  This is the substance in our blood that helps move oxygen around our bodies in the most efficient manner possible.
Limpets are rather delicate creatures and getting them to grow in captivity is a challenge.  Stellar Biotechnologies has built an unusual medical facility that is located right on the ocean at Point Hueneme in Southern California.  By building the facility so close to the sea, they are able to pump the nutrient-dense ocean water into their facility and into the tanks where the limpets live.  The difference here is that the limpets are not removed from their natural environment and killed in order to harvest their blood, instead the researchers here have figured out a way to harvest the KLH without harming the animals in the process.
By growing them specifically for this purpose the numbers of limpets in the wild will not be affected.  Now they can be "harvested" numerous times a year and by growing them in these controlled circumstances, the chance of cross-contamination is also greatly reduced.
KLH is a very important part of today's vaccines.  It works by attaching to much smaller amounts of the inactive virus contained in the vaccine and then helping our immune system "see" the virus and thereby helping the body to build antibodies much more quickly.  In the past, a vaccine might actually harm the recipient because, even with an inactive virus, the toxin is still present.  By lowering the amount of inactive virus used in vaccine, the chances of developing illness are reduced.  There is great hope that a cancer vaccine may be able to be developed that will never have a chance to harm the person that receives it.
With cancer the antigens that are produced are mostly made up of your own tissue.  The body does not recognize these antigens as something to be eradicated because the body only "sees" itself.  If KLH could be attached to those cancer cells they can help the body recognize the disease and then respond by building antibodies.  As researchers continue searching for a cancer vaccine they need a lot of KLH, so this facility at Point Hueneme may actually be partly responsible for the development of that vaccine in the near future.
The more we learn about the diversity in our planets oceans the more opportunity we have to find ways in which it can help us lead better lives. Here at Whale Tail Tortilla Chips we are also in the business of helping people lead better, and healthier, lives.  Contact us to find out where you can find us in your neighborhood.

Bringing the Hip Back to Chips n Dips

If there is one thing tortilla chips lack, its style. Plain, white, triangle. Sure, you have your round tortilla chips, or your bowl shaped tortilla chips, or tortilla chips made of wheat, or sprinkled with lemon, but where is the fun? Lets face it, tortilla chips are simply a transportation device for salsa.
But there is still hope for the tortilla chip and its devoted fans. On the west coast of the country in a land inspired by sunsets and ocean mist, we find the collision of creativity and the tortilla chip. Here is a chip for the painters, for the mid-afternoon surfers, for the thinkers, for the dreamers...and well, for the those of us that find ourselves with the munchies.Whale Tail Chips brings something new to snack table. It brings boldness in shape, and also in flavor. To start things off, they are shaped like the tail of a whale ( If you didn't catch that already). Now, you can perform acrobatic dives in your sea of salsa like you always wanted to. Bring on the waves! With three unique, mouthwatering choices on the front lines, your palate wont get bored.
One of those flavors is Hawaiian Barbeque. This chip brings a party of flavors together for a taste bud pleasing experience. Mango and Lime are the all-stars of the show. Together, with other ingredients, they bring you a tropical barbeque flavor that is tasty alone, or with your favorite salsa.
Now, you may ask, " Where do I buy such an amazing chip?" And the answer....Well, you can find them all over the great state of California, in Washington, and Oregon, in Hawaii, and in select stores in the states of Texas, Massachusetts, Maryland, Utah and Idaho. ( Check Website for more details)
They can also be ordered in packs of 1.5 oz and 9 oz bags online and shipped to your location. So now you know about Whale Tail Chips. Go buy them, try them, eat them, dip them, scoop them, lick them, bite them, and munch them! C'mon, haven't you ever wondered what a tortilla chip shaped like the tail of a whale might taste like?

Exploring the Many Benefits of Chia Seeds for your Health

Here in America, people tend to think of Chia seeds as something that are used to grow plants that resemble furry animals. The fact is that they have been included in Mayan and Aztec diets for centuries, not only because they have health benefits, but because they taste delicious as well. When you learn of some of the benefits of chia seeds, you may just want to try them for yourself.
Improves Heart Health-Chia seeds are high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to reduce bad levels of cholesterol in the body. These seeds are also high in dietary fiber, and may help to reduce fat stores around the heart, thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Antioxidants-Chia seeds help eliminate toxins from the body, and also help support healthy elimination
Rich in nutrients-In addition to high levels of protein, chia seeds also contain approximately 18% of your daily-recommended allowance of calcium, 35% of phosphorus, 50% for manganese, and 24% for magnesium.
Promotes weight loss-Consuming chia seeds on a daily basis is thought to help speed your metabolism, thereby enhancing your weight loss efforts. They also help to suppress the appetite, and the fact that they contain high levels of protein means that you are more likely to lose fat rather than muscle while you slim down.
Helps manage diabetes-A person’s insulin levels are easier to control whenever chia seeds are added to the diet. Regular consumption of chia seeds helps to reduce insulin resistance while also decreasing high blood glucose levels.
Eases arthritis suffering-Since chia seeds have anti-inflammatory properties, they are also beneficial to those who are suffering from arthritis. There is some evidence that they might help relieve some of the pain associated with this condition as well.
Increases energy-Chia seeds help boost energy levels naturally without leaving you feeling jittering or experiencing a “crash” some time later.
How to Eat Chia Seeds
Chia seeds are virtually tasteless; however, they do add texture to food, and are ideal for baking bread with. Other uses for them including sprinkling on cereal, ice cream, salads, vegetables or putting in smoothies.
If you’re looking for a fun way to include chia seeds in your diet, try our blue corn chips that are sprinkled lightly with them. To find out where to buy blue corn chips or any of our other flavors, contact us today.

WHALE TAILS TORTILLA CHIPS RECEIVES NON-GMO PROJECT VERIFICATION FOR ENTIRE WHALE TAILS CHIPS® PRODUCT LINE

Aug 1, 2013

August 1, 2013: Whale Tails Tortilla Chips, LLC. received official verification from the Non-GMO Project on July 19, 2013 for its entire line of Whale Tails Chips®  tortilla chips: Alaea Hawaiian Sea Salt, Deep Blue Corn with Chia Seeds, and their savory Hawaiian Barbeque flavor sweetened with tropical sun-ripened mango.

“We are proud that our product line has met the high standard required to become Non-GMO Project Verified. Whale Tails Chips® believes that food choices matter to our water resources and consumers have a right to know what is in their foods." stated Ric Kraszewski,Co Founder of Whale Tails Tortilla Chips®.

The company shares the concerns surrounding GMOs, their relationship to food allergies, the unknown health implications of introducing GMO ingredients into our food supply, and the effects of commercial herbicides and pestcides on our waterways. When Kraszewski and his wife, Terry, launched the updated Whale Tails Tortilla Chip product line in 2011 they wanted to promote their giving back to ocean conservation approach and believed that using simple, un-compromised Non-GMO ingredients was important. The company had already earned the reputation as the top mission driven healthy snack company in Southern California. In 2012 the company gave back over $14,000 to the Non Profit Wyland Foundation. Terry Kraszewski, Co Founder and CEO, said that their updated bags were a collaboration with the world-renowned marine artist and environmentalist, Wyland of Laguna Beach. Wyland has done more than any other artist to raise awareness of the beauty of life on our blue planet. The non profit Wyland Foundation is actively engaged in teaching millions of students around the country about the importance of conserving our oceans, river, lakes, streams, and wetlands. Both Whale Tails and Wyland hold fast to a simple goal of promoting, protecting, and preserving the world’s ocean, waterways, and marine life. This commitment to ocean life has been integral to both the product and the mission of Whale Tails Tortilla Chips since their inception. In order to pursue this shared aim, Whale Tails Tortilla Chips donates 10 percent from their bags of chips to the Wyland Foundation. "That’s the key to making a difference." says Steve Creech, the vice president of Wyland Worldwide "the revenue raised from the chips sales will go towards our clean water mobile learning center. This program travels to schools across the nation to educate children about urban runoff, habitat destruction and the importance of collaboratively managing water as a shared resource.”

Whale Tails Chips® incorporates organic blue and yellow corn, gourmet sea salts, chia seeds, and mango for a more nutritious snack food alternative. The product line has received an enthusiast reception in the food industry because of its high-quality ingredients and their Non-GMO Project verification.

Tailgate Parties Can Be Fun and Healthy

One of the favorite activities during the many concerts, sporting events and other stadium happenings are tailgate parties.  People love to arrive early in their cars, trucks and mobile homes to begin drinking, eating food and socializing.  It’s a much-loved tradition that only increases in popularity.

Among all the greasy meats cooked on a grill, alcohol and fried food it is also possible to provide something that’s healthy to eat and tastes wonderful.  Whale Tails Tortilla Chips  are good with salsa, guacamole and almost anything that can be used with tortilla chips.  They are also healthy and taste fantastic.

Whale Tail Tortilla Chips  are made from organic blue corn and contain the Mayan seed called Chia.

The many benefits of blue corn is noted in an article from Jennifer Warner titled “Blue Corn Tortilla Packs Healthy Punch”
"Researchers from the home of the tortilla, Mexico, found blue corn tortillas contain 20% more protein than their white corn counterparts. They also have less starch and a lower glycemic index (GI), which may be good news for dieters and people with diabetes."
The chia seeds found in Whale Tail Tortilla Chips are from South America and filled with polyunsaturated fats such as Omega-3 fatty acids.  They also help lower a person’s cholesterol by providing a high amount of fiber.  Chia seeds are valued for their antioxidants as well as important minerals.  They are gluten free and provide a person with the feeling of being full, which can help individuals who overeat.

Tailgate parties no longer need to be a time of unhealthy eating.  When Whale Tail Tortilla Chips are provided, it can be a time of fun as well as nutritious food.

Contact Whale Tail Tortilla Chips and get some for your next tailgating experience or just to enjoy some healthy food that happens to be delicious.

That Rare Moment You've Had With Whales .....Continued

That Rare Moment You've Had With Whales .....Continued

After pinning your empty Wyland art bag to your wall with the rest of your collage, you lay down on your bed, pondering. Wondering how, just how can you taste the signature flavor of Whale Tails chips again? The last five purchases were a flop, your friends keep stealing them! They searched your room and found your stash o' chips. Luckily you've been secretly training to be a parkour master in your apartment (the neighbors are excited).
***
You walk in the store and look around, no familiar faces. So you proceed to the chip aisle and grab a bag, the last one! The purchase goes off without a hitch, but as you walk out the door: Johnny on the right, Timmy on the left. You bolt across the busy street playing real-life Frogger, only to meet Tommy and Smalls. Ducking into the the alley, bouncing off the wall onto the dumpster, and into an un-expecting older fellow's home really surprised your pursuers. The training has paid off. Apologizing, you bust out of his door into the hallway, and open the bag. A Whale Tails chip explodes with flavor in your mouth and your knees get weak as you slowly collapse to the corridor floor. You fall on your back, still crunching away in some type of euphoria, and drop the bag.
***
Upon waking, you realize all the chips are gone, and the bag is a few yards down the hall. You get up to it and brush it off, only slightly scuffed. So you begin the walk of shame back to your apartment. Maybe, just maybe, next time, you'll get to eat 2 Whale Tails chips. How many times have you taken someones Whale Tails chips out of sheer chip hysteria? Let us know!

Eco-Friendly Surfing

Eco-Friendly Surfing

Recent news reports point to a depressing future for surfers because of global climate change. Climatologists are forecasting smaller waves in about 25% of the ocean, including some of the world’s most epic surfing spots. Beaches are shrinking as well, causing damage to coastal habitats on which some sea-life depends. The good news is that the world is waking up to the need for drastic ecological changes and, while some damage is irreversible, things can and are changing for the better of the environment. People have become more concerned about recycling and using products made from low-pollution and recyclable materials. Of course, the surfing community is leading the way and has become more eco-friendly with the use of green materials to make surfboards.
Surfboards were originally made of wood. Hundreds of years ago, Polynesians carved boards by hand from trees indigenous to their habitat. Surfboards with wood blanks are still made, and some surfers prefer them. They key to making an eco-friendly wood surfboard is to use wood from sustainable or farm grown trees; like balsa. Balsa is a strong, hard wood and the trees grow very quickly.
Surfboards are also being made with materials such as at least 40% recycled or biological based foam known as foam blanks. Using foam blanks is better for the environment because the recycled foam used didn’t end up in our landfills or watersheds. It’s also healthier for surfboard makers, reducing their exposure to toxic chemicals otherwise used in traditional polyurethane boards.
Each of us must do our part in diminishing the impact of global warming by reducing our carbon footprint. Every choice we make, from the surfboard we ride to the snacks we eat can make a difference. At Whale Tails Tortilla Chips we employ environmentally sound business practices such as using organic ingredients and degradable packaging. Contact us for more information about our mission and to find our products. Remember, if we all make small changes we can make a big and lasting impact for the better.

Whales Around Wales

Yesterday my old friend and I were sharing a bag Whale Tail Tortilla Chips when he held a chip up, looked at it, and said, "You know, just last summer I visited Wales."
Except I thought he meant, "I visited whales."  And I thought that was pretty cool.  "Like Seaworld?"  I said, "Or did you go whale-watching?"
"Nah, man."  He shook his head.  "Wales.  United Kingdom.  It's west of England.  I had fish and chips, but I like these fish chips better."  He scooped the salsa with the Whale Tail and laughed.
But I was kinda bummed out.  "So you didn't see any whales?"
"No, but I liked visiting Wales.  I don't know if any whales swim around there."
Which got me thinking, as I looked at the crashing waves.  Are there whales jumping and diving and being awesome around Wales?  Can I visit Wales and visit whales at the same time?  Did the people of Wales name themselves after the free-spirited whales and just can't spell?
Normally I don't do "research" or "reading" but for this I just had to know.  I found out that no, the Welsh aren't named after whales (lame), but on the coast there are whales!  Whales in Wales is actually real.  Mind blown.  Earth is awesome.  Whales (and Wales) rule.
But dude, what species?  I got you covered, bro.  Minke and Pilot whales like to hang out by Wales in the summer, while Fin and Killer whales only drop in and wave a fin every once in a while.  Welsh people also see dolphins, seals, and sharks!  When did Wales become totally rad?
Wait, Wales was always totally rad, because it sounds like whales, and has actual whales.  Just let it hang.  I've already done too much thinking for today, so I'm celebrating the coolness of Wales with Whale Tail Tortilla Chips.  Makes sense to me.
If you want to know more about whales or about our product, contact us today!

Non GMO: Why Labels on Genetically Engineered Foods Won’t Cost Consumers a Dime

This November, voters in Washington state will decide on citizens’ ballot initiative I-522 which would require mandatory labeling of foods containing genetically modified ingredients. The initiative embraces the spirit of California’s Prop 37 initiative, which was narrowly defeated last year following a campaign which saw the $8.7 million in donations raised by supporters of the bill nearly matched by Monsanto’s $8.1 million contribution to the $45.6 million opposition campaign. Pepsico, Inc, owners of the Frito-Lay brand, spent $2,145,400 to keep California residents in the dark about GMO ingredients in their products.

In anticipation of another massive campaign by Monsanto and the biotech industry, Zack Kaldveer and Ronnie Cummins of the Organic Consumers Association dispute biotech’s favorite talking point: That labeling would be burdensome and costly, and lead to higher food costs for consumers.

Playing to consumers’ fears of higher food costs makes good strategic sense, especially in tough economic times. But the argument doesn’t hold water, say food manufacturers and retailers who already have systems in place for verifying non-GMO...The system involves using chain-of-custody, legally binding affidavits, not expensive testing.
The beauty of the affidavit system is that it offers retailers and manufacturers a simple, easy way to comply with a regulatory model that provides consumers with the right to know what’s in their food without increasing grocery costs…
Read the whole article, and more on the GMO labeling debate, at OrganicConsumers.org. And rest assured, at Whale Tails Tortilla Chips, we will never have to put a GMO label on our products, because we use only natural, organic, kosher, gluten-free,non GMO ingredients.

4 Reasons to Invite a Whale to Your Next Party

Everyone likes to throw a memorable party. Here are four reasons why you should include a whale in the festivities:
Decorating
There’s nothing worse than having to blow up balloons. Best case is that you end up with the unpalatable taste of latex in your mouth. Worst case is you become lightheaded and pass out, reviving some time later to find you missed the party completely. But have no fear - a single breath from a blue whale can inflate more than 160 dozen balloons.

Jump, Jive, and Whale
What’s a party without an impromptu visit from the local authorities? At 188 decibels, the whistle of the blue whale is the loudest sound produced by any animal. That’s sure to make your party the envy of your friends (and the scorn of your neighbors).

Life of the Party
To be the life of the party, you need some unique talent. Maybe you can breathe fire. Maybe you juggle. Maybe you’re just reall y good at laughing. The fact is, everyone loves a good secret talent, and this is why you should invite a whale to your next party. Sometimes, whales will rise to the surface and blast a fountain of watery mist, called a "blow." Not only will this majestic fountain add to the ambiance of your event, but it will come in handy when your fire breathing routine accidentally sets the curtains ablaze.

There’s no Such Thing as Bad Karaoke
All whales speak - they moan, groan, squeak and sigh. It may not sound very pleasant to the ear, but neither does Karaoke, and that is inexplicably popular at parties. Nothing says highlight of the night quite like singing a duet of Loveshack by the B-52s with a whale.

Despite all the benefits, maybe having a whale at your next party is a bad idea. Whales probably aren't house trained, and even if they were, they would make an incredible mess of the back yard. Instead, why not add Whale Tails chips to the guest list? These playful and healthy snacks are sure to get the party started. With three varieties to choose from, there will be something for everyone. To learn more, contact us today!

Drink Your Healthy Snacks For Optimum Nutritional Benefit

In an effort to consume foods that are high in nutrition, that also taste good and have the added benefit of being convenient, we can sometimes find that our choices are limited.  Many times we will need to look away from any foods that are heavily processed because so much of the nutritional value can be loss during the "manufacture" of the food.  To realize the most nutritional benefit from any food, the best way to eat it is as close to raw as possible.  One of the most convenient ways to consume raw foods is through the use of a juicer or a blender.

You may have seen the infomercials that tell us how amazing the health benefits are from juicing. However, you do not need to purchase an expensive juicing machine because many of the same types of benefits can be achieved using the more versatile home blender.  There are differences between the two methods, but both methods offer far more benefits than eating processed and chemical laden foods.

Let's examine the two methods and we will see that there are benefits to both processes.

The Juicer
When you juice fresh fruits and vegetables you remove all the water and nutritional value and are left with the fibre.  Your normal digestive processes require more work to break down that fibre so by removing it your body will have an easier time absorbing the nutrients.  The juice actually provides a higher concentration of nutrients than if the fruits and veggies were consumed whole.

When you are dealing with digestive issues and sensitivities, juicing can be especially helpful in reducing stress to your digestive system.  Rather than experiencing the slow release of nutrients you would see with a slower digestive process, juicing delivers a nutritional "punch" that is instant and powerful.

Be cautious about consuming only fruit juices because they are high in natural sugars and in great quantities they can lead to difficulties in how your body maintains blood sugar levels.

The Blender
When you are using a blender you will use the entire fruit or vegetable including all of the fibre removed when juicing.  The blender does chop the fibre into extremely small pieces which makes it much easier for the body to digest.  The fibre also slows the digestive process which means a more even release of nutrients throughout the day.  The fibre also means the smoothie you make will be more filling and therefore keep you from feeling hungry again sooner.

The volume of the food you process in a blender means that you will be getting more servings for each dollar spent.  Also, you can pack more servings of fruits and veggies into a single serving of juice than you can into a smoothie.

A smoothie for breakfast is an excellent way to begin your day or as a between meal "snack" which helps us resist the more unhealthy choices we might make.

When the goal is to detoxify or to heal, this nutrient-rich way of eating is much more effective at restoring your body from the cellular level.  Try and consume your fresh juice or smoothie as soon as possible because just the exposure to air and light will start to diminish the nutritional value.

Whale Tails Tortilla Chips are healthy snacks made with a minimum amount of processing so that the nutritional value remains high.  They are a perfect compliment to your fresh squeezed juice or smoothie.  We would love to introduce you to all of our healthy snack choices so please, contact us for more information.

Pig Makes Big Splash For Marine Life

Sunshine, beach, waves, a board, and....a pig??  Yes, a surfing pig has become the latest online viral hit. Matthew Bell posted a video, captured with a board-mounted GoPro camera, on Youtube last month, showing himself hitting the waves with his two-month-old pet pig Zorro.

"We've had a couple of pigs and I always thought it would be fun to surf with one," Bell told the New Zealand Herald

Figuring it "could be a fun idea" to teach a pig how to ride his longboard, he soon realized that Zorro took to it..well, like a pig takes to water.  Of course, their first appearance on the beach was exactly what one would expect, beachgoers looked at them like they were crazy. Matthew found himself fielding such questions as whether pigs can swim (apparently they stick their snouts up in the air and go for it!).

It wasn't long before the piglet became a hit on Mt Maunganui's Main Beach.

Since the video posted, 27-year-old Matthew and Zorro have been featured in newspapers, TV shows, and websites around the world. However, going viral isn't the focus of this innovative surfer and his porcine companion. They're utilizing all of this new found media exposure to draw attention to the group Kiwis Against Seabed Mining (KASM), hoping to increase awareness of Maui's marine life, especially the critically endangered dolphin.

So, the next time you're at the beach, watching the surfers catching waves, enjoying your Whale Tails Chips and salsa, and think you see a pig on a longboard...you could be right!

Just Ask The Aztecs About The Benefits Of Chia Seeds

Just Ask The Aztecs About The Benefits Of Chia Seeds

Have you heard the stories about the "running people" of the Copper Canyons in Mexico?  It has been said that they are perhaps the finest long distance runners on earth.  The stories tell of 100 to 300 mile runs that the people do with ease.  You can just imagine the intense physical conditioning that must take place to be able to run like that!

The Tarahumara people of Mexico begin that conditioning at a very young age with the goal to be becoming runners for life, and along with a simple diet, the people have been known to live to 100 years old.  They also rarely suffer from disease and illnesses like we do in the western world.  Main staples of their diet were chia seeds and pinole.  Pinole was actually a type of roasted corn, often mixed with sugar, which is an excellent food for staving off hunger. Super concentrated and super nutritious, it is a food that will sustain you for weeks.

The mighty chia seed comes from a member of the mint family that thrives in the desert.  These seeds, along with the pinole are true "super foods" and chia offers twice the protein of any other seeds, like flax seeds for instance. They are also a rich source of antioxidants.

Dr. Andrew Weil's website tells us that:
"Chia is very rich in omega-3 fatty acids, even more so than flax seeds. And it has another advantage over flax: chia is so rich in antioxidants that the seeds don't deteriorate and can be stored for long periods without becoming rancid. And, unlike flax, they do not have to be ground to make their nutrients available to the body. Chia seeds also provide fiber (25 grams give you 6.9 grams of fiber) as well as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, molybdenum, niacin, and zinc."
The Aztec peoples of Mexico ate chia seeds as a staple of their diets as the plant was grown all over Mexico as far back as 1500 BC.  The chia seed helped maintain their powerful military and was known as the ultimate survival food.  They also used chia for medicine and it was included in religious ceremonies as an offering to the gods.  When the Spanish Conquistadors arrived they made note of the importance of this food in the people's diets and they promptly decided to do whatever they could to remove it from the people's lives.

Today, we know that the mighty chia is one of the most nutritious foods on the planet.  We also know that it can help us reduce our risk of heart disease and even help us avoid the onset of Type 2 Diabetes. Studies have shown that eating chia "improves major and emerging cardiovascular risk factors".

When we learned about all the health benefits of eating chia seeds, we just had to find a way to include them in our snacks.  Along came the Organic, Blue Corn Tor"chia" chip which has been infused with the mighty chia seed.

Non GMO: Petition to Stop FDA Approval of Transgenic Salmon - Deadline April 26

Although genetically modified crops have been part of the U.S. food supply for years, genetically modified animals have remained taboo. Now, a fast-growing salmon threatens to break that taboo, as it passes through the final stages required to become the first transgenic animal approved by the Food and Drug Administration for human consumption.
AquAdvantage is an Atlantic salmon, modified by the addition of a growth hormone gene from the Chinook salmon, and a genetic switch from an eel-like creature called the ocean pout. The switch keeps the growth hormone gene active all year, rather than only during warm weather. The genetically modified fish reach market weight in around 18 months, compared to three years for the natural Atlantic salmon.
The FDA tentatively concluded in 2010 that the fish would be safe to eat, and for the environment. In December, 2012, the agency released a “draft environmental assessment and preliminary finding of no significant impact,” effectively clearing the product’s path to enter the U.S. market, likely with no labeling to distinguish it from non GMO salmon. The FDA was scheduled to accept comments on their findings until February 25, but later extended the comment period until April 26.
GMO watchdogs Institute for Responsible Technology are petitioning the FDA not to approve GE salmon, and in the event that it is approved, require it to be labeled as genetically modified. If you are among the majority Americans who oppose introducing genetically modified meats into the food supply, sign the petition before the April 26 comment deadline.
For more information on our commitment to non GMO food, contact us.

That Rare Moment You've Had With Whales

You know that moment, when you get to the beach and sit down with a bag of Whale Tails Chips. Then you look far into the ocean, and it happens: You see a whale burst out of the water, and it floats mid-air for a second. It hits the water and the last thing you see is that tail. But right before that tail disappears you hold up a Whale Tails Chip in front of your one open eye, and it matches up perfectly with the monstrous tail in the distance. The chip resonates with a silver lining. Right when the tail disappears with a splash you crunch into that delicious organic sliver of natural ingestible love, and Dick Dale's "Misirlou" explodes through your earbuds from your mp3 player.......you know that moment? Yeah we don't either, but it sounds great doesn't it? We imagine right then as the song plays a cavalcade of your half-naked friends would come running/tumbling over the hill through t he hot sand heading straight for the water, until they spot you holding a bag of natural, kosher, organic, gluten free Whale Tails Chips. That's when they take a sharp ninety degree left directly towards you, and you become the bottom of the NFL fumble pile, people peeling off your friends one by one to see who's got the bag. They are just that tasty.

Well, all your chips are gone but you still got that fine piece of Wyland art to pin to your Whale Tails Chips collage wall at home, right? Got a good story like this one? Tell us about it!

No Whales Were Harmed During the Making of This Chip!

These days you can never be too sure about what’s in the food you’re eating or where it came from.  Many companies go to great lengths to hide and disguise this information, because the facts are typically horrifying. Whale Tails Tortilla Chips is proud of the ingredients they put in each and every chip and is happy to share with their customers where those ingredients came from.

The word ‘chip’ has a bad rap.  It is often associated with grease, fat, and high levels of sodium. But people continue to eat chips because of the great taste.  Whale Tails Tortilla chips transforms what we thought we knew about chips by making it a healthy snack and still maintaining that same delicious taste every chip eater wants.
  • The Original Flavor Yellow Organic Corn with “Alaea” Red Gourmet Hawaiian chip contains Alaea, a salt that is a product of the Hawaiian Islands.  Alaea is unique because of its low sodium content and is an essential mineral that our body requires on a daily basis.
  • The Hawaiian Barbeque tortilla chips take a new spin on the long standing concept of the barbeque chip.  It contains a savory island barbeque flavor with a light trace of mango and a splash of lime for zest.
  • We can’t forget about the Organic Blue Corn Infused with Chia tortilla chips.  This flavor contains the super seed chia.  This small seed packs a punch.  It contains high amounts of omega-3, more than any other vegetable.  The seed has essential amino acids, and five times more calcium than milk.
All Whales Tails tortilla chips are made with organic corn grown in the USA.  These chips are gluten free and contain zero transfat. Chip eaters will be thrilled to know Whale Tails Tortilla chips contain no GMO’s and are kosher.  Enjoy this guilt free snack and relax knowing no whales were injured in the making of this chip!

Think Sustainable And Start Your Own Organic Garden

Soon it will be time to think about warm days and working in the fertile soil.  Many of us are thinking about starting a "Victory Garden" of sorts right in our own backyards.  We have dreams of fresh fruits and vegetables that we brought to the family table ourselves.  Investing in a garden can certainly pay off in so many ways.
If you have been think about saving money and eating healthy the organic garden is a great place to begin.  Here are some tips so you can create a sustainable, abundant source of healthy food for you and your family.
  • Choose Your Crops Wisely
You might think that grabbing a fistful of seed packs and planting everything you can think of will bring you a chance at a bigger harvest but, the opposite may be true.  By choosing plants that will ripen at different times of the season you can avoid having to offer beans to all your neighbors.  By growing plants that will produce all season, like tomatoes for instance, you will be able to enjoy your fresh veggies every day.
  • Grow Primarily Green & Organic
It is important to avoid chemicals and pesticides to ensure a healthier harvest.  Shop for "natural", "organic" or "green" products to keep pests away, even certain flowers, like marigolds or nasturtium, are known to natural repel certain insects that can be damaging to your plants.  Plant Yarrow to attract beneficial insects, such as ladybugs, that can rid your plants of certain insect infestations, naturally.  Also be sure that your seeds or seedlings are certified organic.
  • Plant Crops That Grow Well Together
There are certain crops that when grown in unison can actually benefit each other.  This method of gardening can produce better results and less depletion of vital minerals and nutrients from your soil.  Corn and potatoes grown well in rows next to each other and so do squash and beans.  Lettuce and carrots are also considered "companion" plants.
We are all striving to be responsible consumers and stewards to our sometimes fragile planet.  The home organic garden is an excellent way to achieve a lower carbon footprint while contributing to the health and well-being of your family.  Our organic snack products are also an excellent choice for healthy eating and with our many varieties and flavors you are sure to find a product that we hope will make you feel good about the natural food choices you are making for your family.  Contact us today to find a retailer near you!

Facts About Whales That Will Enable You To Impersonate A Marine Biologist As Long As You Refuse To Speak To Anyone Over 6

Eating Whale Tails does not make you a marine biologist. Memorize these facts about whales to satisfy your own curiosity and avoid any embarrassing social gaffes in case you get to talk with a real scientist.
  • Whales with no teeth are called baleen whales. Whales with teeth are called toothed whales. Not everything is complicated.
  • Blowholes are nostrils. They’re located on top of a whale’s head and provide air to the lungs. Some whales can stay deep under water for an hour or longer before they need to get more air.
  • A vapor spout over a whale means they’re breathing out. That fountain is a mix of gas and condensed water.
  • Blubber is a layer of fat under the skin of a whale. It provides energy and insulation. If your doctor has told you that you need to lose weight, these arguments will not be persuasive.
  • Dolphins and porpoises are whales too. Flipper from TV was a bottlenose dolphin.
  • Blue whales are the largest at 100 feet or more, which is about one-third of a football field. Porpoises are the smallest at only four feet.
  • Mother whales are called cows. Newborn whales are called calves. Gestation time varies by species. Sperm whale pregnancies can last for 19 months. The average is 9 to 15 months, and many whales nurse for more than one year.
  • Moby Dick was a sperm whale, the largest species of toothed whales. Their huge snouts contain close to a ton of oil.
  • Different species have very different life spans. Some scientists believe that bowhead whales can live for as long as 200 years. Most species average about 20 to 40 years.
This should be enough whale trivia to impress small children. If one of them catches you using the same fake Latin term to refer to both a dolphin and your carburetor, contact us for an extra bag of Whale Tails to bribe them into silence.

Everyday Whales Your Friends Totally Won't Make Fun of You for Owning

Okay, so I lied. If you’re having friends over for a whale tail salsa session, you might want to hide these other whale accessories. Some people just won’t understand your perfectly harmless, and completely normal obession with whales.

Whale iPhone Cover- Surprisingly functional, this iPhone case has hidden compartments to store your headphones and other small items. The tail also works like a stand, or a hook for hanging the phone, and can even be used to wrap the headphone cord around. It's also great for making you look like you have a weird tumor growing out of your ear.

Octa TabletTail Whale Kit-
Speaking of technology themed whale swag, this tail serves as an iPad stand. The base suctions right to the back of the tablet, and the flexible tail moves until you’ve got the perfect angle for watching all of your favorite whale videos, alone.

Whale Bookends-
Perfect for the book worm with shelves of Moby Dick, this whale keeps your books standing straight. Good luck explaining why you still read paper books, though.

Bottle Whales-
If you’re having salsa and whale tail chips, it might be tempting to break out your whale tail bottle opener. If you want your friends to start calling you names like, “Whale Head” and “Crazy Whale Dude,” go right ahead. If not, then tuck this bad boy away for another night.

Killer Whale Costume-
If you decide to wear this to your party, there’s just no hope for you. You might as well let your whale flag fly, and embrace your strange obsession with whales. They probably make better friends than humans anyway…
One or two of these items might be socially acceptable, but be weary of displaying your whole collection on the first date. And when you run out of chips, or friends, contact us.

The Search For Non-GMO Foods: Where The GMOs Hide

When the giant food manufacturers spend millions of dollars to avoid having to label their foods when they are genetically-modified, you have to ask yourself, why?  We have read the stories about the links between these "frankenfoods" and health problems.  There is little doubt that if the foods were labeled, it might mean the end of the GMO forever.
Unfortunately, it could also cause problems for the food manufacturing industry in general, as many of these GMOs are hidden in a lot of the foods we eat every day.  Most commonly, they are found in those foods that are the most processed, prepared and packaged.
  • Soy
Most soy is genetically modified today so the only way you can be sure to avoid GMOs in soy is by buying 100% Organic.  This includes Tofu and soy sauce as well as food containing vegetarian isoflavones and protein.
  • Corn
Corn is a biggie because it is found in many forms in most of our processed foods.  Not only is high fructose corn syrup probably one of the most destructive things we consume, it is likely made with "frankenfood" corn products.
  • Wheat
Wheat, like corn is found in just about everything. Every baked cookie, cake, bread, pancake and dinner roll contains wheat.  It is also used in soups and sauces to thicken.  The best way to avoid it is to look for "ancient grain flour" or flour specifically labeled as non-gmo.
  • Sugar
Many people think that our sugar comes from sugar cane fields, in Hawaii, growing in the sun.  That is not the case.  Most of our refined, white table sugar and the sugar used in just about everything processed, comes from Sugar Beets.  They are probably genetically modified.  Try the organic Agave sweetener or look for 100% organic cane sugar.
It's sad to say but the majority of snack foods today are on the "foods to avoid" list when trying to steer clear of GMOs.  At Whale Tails Tortilla Chips we take great pride and pleasure in offering only non gmo, 100% organic, gluten-free and super healthy snack foods.  Contact us to find a store near you where you grab a bag today!

Of Gray Oceans and Red-Orange Salsa

Winter is a beautiful time to be near the ocean. Gray skies blend seamlessly into the horizon, making it difficult to discern where sky meets sea. Northern Pacific storms create epic surfing conditions up and down the west coast, washing natural treasures onto sandy beaches. The shoreline is pristine and quiet; sometimes the only footprints left behind are those made by flocks of Rock Sandpipers and California Gulls.
But still.
In the depths of winter (albeit a California one), we here at Whale Tails yearn for the heat of the sun and a little color to brighten our days. Even the hearty soups and stews that are a mainstay this time of year are beginning to feel a little heavy and overdone. But with the relief of spring feeling like an eternity from now, what's a sun-starved soul to do?
Make winter salsa, of course. A spicy, citrusy salsa that warms the belly, clears the sinuses and brightens any table, even on the darkest of days.
Dog Days of Winter Salsaadapted from Gourmet magazine
1 28-oz. can whole or chopped tomatoes
2 cloves of garlic, minced
2 dried chiles japones*
1 yellow bell pepper, chopped small
1 small yellow onion, diced
1 navel orange
1 T chopped fresh cilantro
1/3 cup olive oil
1 T fresh lime juice
1/2 t. salt
In a skillet over medium-low heat, add 1 1/2 tablespoons of olive oil. When oil is hot, add chiles japones. Turn until all sides of chiles have blackened. Remove from pan. Turn up heat to medium. Add onions and yellow bell pepper, sauteeing until vegetables are soft, about five minutes.
Grate 1/2 tsp. of zest from orange and reserve. Squeeze juice from orange. Add orange juice to onion mixture and cook 1 minute. Set aside.
In small food processor, add remaining olive oil and blackened chiles; puree. Dice tomato and in a medium bowl, add reserved zest, onion mixture, garlic, cilantro, lime juice and salt. Add oil/chile mixture. Stir until well mixed. Salsa keeps, covered and chilled, 1 week.

Marine Life: Sea Animals Are Not Named For Their Flavor

Sometimes I wonder if there is any kind of marine life that isn’t eaten, and maybe considered a delicacy, somewhere in the world. Even coral is ground up and marketed as a calcium supplement and cancer cure, although the Food and Drug Administration warns us not to believe the hype.

Coral aside, many of the animals at the reef look and sound pretty tasty. Jellyfish implies sweet, while purple-striped jelly suggests extra sweet goodness.

I don’t eat pigs, but might be willing to try porkfish sausage. How about a hogfish bacon, lettuce sea slug and tomtate sandwich? Is that kosher?
Sea cucumber sounded like something that belongs in a salad, until I found out it comes in chocolate chip and cookie dough varieties. Maybe we will never find them in a pint of Ben and Jerry’s, but they must taste better than their cousin, the donkey dung sea cucumber. I mean, they just have to, right?

The candy basslet looks just like those little striped sucking candies my grandmother used to keep in her purse. Instead of a fishbowl, keep them in a candy dish on your coffee table, and watch your guests’ surprised faces when they reach for one. The peppermint basslet looks like it should be decorating my Christmas tree, or maybe a Christmas tree worm.

An orange icing sponge might be a tasty treat. Just add “cake” at the end, and it’s a dessert. I can wash it down with some tea and honeycomb cowfish.

Come to think of it, even coral calcium might not be so hard to swallow if it came from soft mushroom coral. I like mushrooms.

The Search For Gluten Free Chinese Food Ends Here

One of the most difficult things about trying to live gluten free today is attempting to figure out what is safe to order from your typical restaurant menu.  Eventually, most establishments will probably offer a separate menu for those who are sensitive to gluten.  Until then, there are some foods that you can feel confident in ordering at the restaurant where you get your favorite chinese take-out.
  • Desserts
Chinese New Year's cookies, almond cookies, steamed puddings and Chinese rice cake.  Some examples include Tangyuan (a dumpling), Nian gao (Chinese New Year Cake), the ear-shaped Erkuai and Tainan Bowl Rice Cake.
  • Appetizers
Dim Sum is a favorite dumpling made with rice and Spring Rolls are often made with rice flour wrappings.  Fried Bean Curd is another good choice in appetizers.  Fried foods are often made with a corn starch coating so inquire if your favorite is gluten-free.
  • Entrees
Most rice dishes are gluten-free including steamed and fried rice, sizzling rice and rice noodles.  Also, Stuffed Bean Curd and Bean Thread noodles are good choices.
  • Rice Flour
Rice flour is used in steamed noodles, rice buns, pancakes and wraps that surrounding fillings (make sure they do not contain soy sauce), steamed dumplings and many types of traditional cookies.
At Whale Tails Chips, we hope we can help made sticking to your diet while eating out much easier.  It is always a good idea that you inquire of your server which foods will fit your needs for a gluten-free meal.
When it comes to your questions about healthy eating and snacking, we want to assure you that all of our products are kosher, organic, GMO-free with zero trans fat and, of course, naturally gluten free.  In addition to all natural ingredients, our unique shape for an organic tortilla chip is a reminder that Whale Tails Chips is actively involved in worldwide marine conservation and educational programs.  Contact us to learn more or to find your new favorite snack!
